At
the beginning of fall, I thought it would be the typical weather of haze and
rain, but then God blessed us with a lot of sunshine. The trees this year seems
prettier, more colorful actually. Now that it is fall one of the fruit of the
summer that can be enjoyed is canned veggies and fruits. Since, I had never
tried canning before, I decided to start small. I made a big pot of stewed
veggies (eggplant, carrots, onions, tomatoes) and canned them. Initially, I
wanted to go through this process with someone, but that never worked out, so I
ventured to do it on my own. My friend told me step by step what to do. After
finishing, I wasn’t sure if it turned out right. Well, yesterday, we opened my
first jar of canned veggies and they were really delicious. They had not
spoiled which means that I did it right. This may seem strange to you but for
me, it is another way of understanding the Ukrainian way of life. Most
Ukrainian families engage in the canning process year after year because
otherwise, a lot of the fruits and veggies from the harvest would spoil, they
would be limited in what they could eat during the winter, and they would have
to spend a lot of unnecessary money on food. Now, I be honest, I’m not sure if canning
in huge amounts is for me, because it takes a lot of time, but I am willing to
try, at least once.

Blessings to you as you continue the ministry God has called you to. How exciting to learn a new skill, canning. Takes me back “home”. We canned when I was growing up. How delicious and profitable. It was well worth the effort and time. Sure paid off on a cold winters night. The stewed tomatoes were awesome and the peach cobbler was fabulous. Be blessed. Praying for you and the ministry.

Hey, this brought back memories. My stepmom would have us assist her with canning fruit during the winter months. She is now 81 years of age and I still hold this to value and appreciate all that she taught me. Unfortunately, I do not remember the process but what I do remember is the fun we had once I embraced it. Proud of you and as always so good to hear from you.!!!

Wow! That’s old school, my folks did that when we where growing up in North Carolina…..but we’ve lost the art of preparing for the winter, we just make a Wal-Mart run…. Bless you Tania, enjoy.

Dear Tania, Wow, another sign that you are fitting into the culture of the people there. We always canned in the summer, fruit, garden vegetables, meat, chicken. Our Mother always was prepared for the hard winter months. She baked bread and cookies every other day, and she only really bought cold cuts and velveeta cheese from the store. We pray that God will continue to give you a fruitfut ministry for Him.
Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving. He has een so good. Blessings!

Dear Tania, My message disappeared and it said to write another omment. We are so proud of you doing something new and all on your own. You are certainly learning to adapt into your new culture. We are sure you are enjoying Borsch soup which my Mother taught us how to make. It is delicious. Our Mother had us can fruit, vegetables and all different types of meat and chicken and she was ready for the cold winter months. She did baking of bread and goodies every other day. They were all so good. Blessings as you serve Him. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving bearing fruit for Him.
Lovingly, The Baxters

Hey Tania!
Thanks for sharing your experiences. This one hit home for me too. Canning is an old tradition in our family that was lost when my grandmother passed on in 2003. I think Donna Huff’s idea of having a canning party is a great one! It would be a good segway to introducing some of the other aspects of the Ukranian culture as well and maybe inspire missions too!! I would love to be a part of it, and bring my daughter too!!
Blessings,
Carla
